TECHNICAL UPDATE
November 28, 2007
------------------
"We have a storage facility protected by both ESFR system and an
adjacent system with standard response spray sprinklers. Does
extending the ESFR protection 15 ft into the adjacent area per 12.3
eliminate the need for the draft curtain per 8.4.6.4?"
We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2007 edition that you identified as the
applicable standard. Our informal interpretation is that the draft
curtain is also required.
Sections 12.3 and (12.1.5, 2002 ed.) requires the design basis to
extend 15 ft past the edge of the higher demand so that the
overlapping discharge will be adequate. The requirements of Section
8.4.6.4 address the issue of heat flow from any fire and are not
affected by a corresponding hazard/discharge relationship. The draft
curtain is meant to keep the adjacent ESFR sprinklers from activating
before the spray sprinklers over the fire due to their lower thermal
response. For this to actually work, a fire cannot occur beneath the
draft stop. That's why there is an additional requirement for a clear
aisle directly beneath the draft stop.

Update is prepared by the Technical Services Dept. of the AFSA: Vice
President of Engineering and Technical Services Roland Huggins, a PE
registered in fire protection engineering; Phill Brown, a NICET IV
certified automatic sprinkler technician and NFPA Certified Fire
Protection Specialist (CFPS) and Tom Wellen, a degreed fire protection
engineering technologist. This is provided with the understanding
that the AFSA assumes no liability for this opinion or actions taken
on it and they are not to be considered the official position of the
