TECHNICAL UPDATE
January 30, 2008
_________________________
"Are you required to add the domestic water demand (showers, washer,
bathtub, etc.) to the hydraulic calculations for a NFPA 13D type
system?"
We have reviewed the 2007 Edition of NFPA 13D that you have identified
as the applicable Standard. Our informal interpretation is that a
sprinkler system for a single dwelling unit will not require any
inclusion for domestic demand.
There is only one type of installation that requires including a
domestic demand with the sprinkler calculation. A multipurpose system
that consists of a common supply main providing both domestic and
sprinkler water AND serving more than one dwelling unit will require
the inclusion of 5 gpm for domestic demand. This requirement comes
from Subsection 6.3 (1). An allowance for the exclusion of the
domestic demand is permitted if means are provided to prevent flow
into the domestic water system upon operation of a sprinkler. This can
be accomplished by installing a residential domestic shutoff valve
that will automatically shutoff the supply to the domestic system when
a sprinkler activates. The residential domestic shutoff valve is only
available in the 1-inch size according to the manufacturer.
