TECH TALK
JUNE 2008

IMPROVING THE STANDARDS
NFPA 13/13R/13D ROP's are available and can be download from the NFPA
web site at www.NFPA.org under the Codes and Standards section. You
can submit a Comment on any action taken on the submitted proposals.
The cut-off date for comments is 8/29/08. A good starting point is
reviewing the summaries on some of the changes in the ROP published in
the May issue of Sprinkler Age.
CPVC AND INCOMPATIBLE CHEMICALS
The manufacturers of CPVC piping have been devoting more attention to
the issue of incompatible chemicals. You will find on their web sites
as well as in shipments of material forms identifying the required
cautionary measures. There are three forms. One directed to
homeowners: Important Information with Regards to Your Fire Sprinkler
System, one to the contractor: Product Label, and one to the GC:
Notification to Jobsite Building Trades. As identified on the last
form, the GC must ensure no other trades allow cabling (especially
communication cable) to come in contact with the CPVC as well as it
not being exposed to any non-water based paint, insecticides, or
fungicides to name a few items. One of the cautionary items listed to
the contractors is to ensure that CPVC is not shipped or stored with
metal products to avoid packing oils nor should it be handled with
gloves contaminated with oils such as from handling steel products, etc.
MIXING SPRINKLER TYPES
Since different types of sprinkler have different installation and
discharge criteria, you are not allowed to mix different sprinkler
types within one remote area. Naturally, there is an exception –
somewhat. 13:8.4.5.3 states that where residential sprinklers are
installed in a compartment, all sprinklers within it shall be the fast
response type (that has been in NFPA 13 since the 1996 edition). This
sentence is not needed if only residential sprinklers were installed
since they all are fast response types. The Sprinkler Handbook
confirms other types of sprinklers are allowed. The rub is that
nowhere does it tell you how to mix the differing design criteria.
Instead of attempting to assign a design criteria, a better idea is to
have it removed from NFPA 13.
