TECHNICAL UPDATE

JUNE 4, 2008

-------------------------

"We have an open nozzle deluge system in a duct handling hot dusty air. Occasionally, the customer would like to inject water into the system to lower the temperature. Can we use the same line fed from a separate pump on the site into the same set of nozzles? The supply line would have double check valves."

We have reviewed the 2006 edition of the International Fire Code as the applicable Standard. Our informal interpretation is that the system should not be modified for other uses unless approved by the AHJ.

Section 901.8 of the IFC states, "Removal of or tampering with equipment. It shall be unlawful for any person to remove, tamper with or otherwise disturb any fire hydrant, fire detection and alarm system, fire suppression system, or other fire appliance required by this code except for the purpose of extinguishing fire, training purposes, recharging or making necessary repairs, or when approved by the fire code official." The NFPA 15 standard was also checked and the scope indicates the water spray system is for fire protection service. It does not indicate that the system can be modified for other purposes. Thus the deluge system should not be modified unless it is approved by the AHJ.

Technical Update is prepared by the Technical Services Dept. of the AFSA: Vice President of Engineering and Technical Services Roland Huggins, a PE registered in fire protection engineering; Phill Brown, a NICET IV certified automatic sprinkler technician and NFPA Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS) and Tom Wellen, a degreed fire protection engineering technologist. This is provided with the understanding that the AFSA assumes no liability for this opinion or actions taken on it and they are not to be considered the official position of the NFPA or its technical committees.
