TECHNICAL UPDATE
JANUARY 13, 2010
-------------------

My understanding is that NFPA 13R will allow you to omit sprinkler protection
in linen and laundry chute but the IBC also addresses laundry chutes,
903.2.10.2 Rubbish and Linen Chutes. An automatic sprinkler system shall be
installed at the top of rubbish and linen chutes and in their terminal rooms.
Chutes extending through three or more floors shall have additional sprinkler
heads installed within such chutes at alternate floors. Chute sprinklers shall
be accessible for servicing. Does the IBC section 903.2.10.2 override NFPA 13R
in this case and would sprinkler protection be required in a laundry/linen
chute?

We have reviewed NFPA 13R, 2007 Edition and the 2006 Edition of the IBC that
you indicated as the applicable standard and code. Our informal interpretation
is that the IBC will require the linen chute to be sprinklered. NFPA 13R does
not discuss linen chutes but the IBC in Section 903.2.10.2 does require the
protection of the chute. The IBC sets the requirement for the protection of the
linen chute for all buildings sprinklered or not.

Technical Update is prepared by the Technical Services Dept. of the AFSA: Vice
President of Engineering and Technical Services Roland Huggins, a PE registered
in fire protection engineering; Phill Brown, a NICET IV certified automatic
sprinkler technician and NFPA Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS) and
Tom Wellen, a degreed fire protection engineering technologist. This is
provided with the understanding that the AFSA assumes no liability for this
opinion or actions taken on it and they are not to be considered the official
position of the NFPA or its technical committees.
