----------------- TECHNICAL UPDATE JULY 21, 2010 ----------------- “We have a discount tire store with 18 ft of storage with a room height of 22 feet 10 inches, would Table 18.4(d) apply? The 36 inch clearance from deflector to the top of storage could also be an issue?” We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2007 Edition that you indicated as the applicable standard. Our informal interpretation is Table 18.4(d) could be applied but the 36-inch clearance is also applicable. If one elects to use ESFR (per Table 18.4(d)), they must also comply with the installation requirements of chapter 8. As required by 13:8.12.6, a minimum clearance of 36 inches is required between the sprinkler deflector and the top of storage. This clearance is measured to a horizontal plane at the top of storage. As such, with 18-foot storage, the deflectors cannot be more than 12 inches below the ceiling. Normally one can reduce the clearance to 18 inches by using spray sprinklers but per 13:8.5.6.5, all types of sprinklers must have a 36-inch clearance for stored tires. ----------------- Technical Update is prepared by the Technical Services Dept. of the AFSA: Roland Huggins, a PE registered in fire protection engineering, Vice President of Engineering and Technical Services; Phill Brown, a NICET IV certified automatic sprinkler technician and NFPA Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS) and Tom Wellen, a degreed fire protection engineering technologist.
