Concealed Combustible Space Under Pitched Roof

"Is perpendicular to the slope up the slope or the other way? If I have
sprinklers
spaced at a maximum of 15 ft up the slope, I would then space the sprinklers at
a maximum of 8 ft the other way and calculate the heads at 7 psi. I'm not quite
sure which way is considered perpendicular to the slope and which way is
considered
parallel to the roof slope. I think parallel to the roof slope would be from the
low point to the high point (peak) with the sprinkler maximum of 15 ft in this
direction. Is this correct?"

We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2010 edition that you indicated as the applicable
standard.
Our informal interpretation is that parallel to the roof slope would be from the
low point to the high point (peak).

Your question indicates that there may be some confusion in the application of
the
terms "perpendicular" and "parallel" to the slope in Table 8.6.2.2.1(a). The
slope
is from the eave to the peak. In a concealed space with a sloped roof greater
than
4 in 12, heat from a fire will migrate quickly up the slope instead of spreading
out horizontally in all directions as it would if the roof were horizontal. At
normal light hazard spacing the heat from a fire located between rows of
sprinklers
could go up the slope to the peak and the sprinklers nearest the fire would be
slow
to activate, if at all. The criteria call for the sprinklers to be closer
together
to promote prompt activation of the sprinklers nearest the fire. For example,
in
an attic with A-frame wood trusses spaced at 2 ft on centers, the branch lines
would
be installed perpendicular to and hung from the trusses. They would be parallel
to the roof peak. If the 8 x 15 ft spacing option were chosen, the lines would
be 15 ft apart along the slope and the sprinklers would be 8 ft apart along the
lines. This 8 ft dimension is perpendicular to the trusses, parallel to the
line
of the peak, and in NFPA 13's wording "perpendicular to the slope". This would
allow
one to choose a starting pressure necessary to deliver the density for a light
hazard
design. If the sprinklers are spaced perpendicular to the slope greater than 8
ft
up to a maximum of 10 ft, the minimum starting pressure is 20 psi. Regarding the
5 ft minimum distance from the eave, the spacing can then be up to 7 1/2 ft
from
the eave if the 8 x 15 ft option is selected. There may be some confusion in
applying
the commentary in the handbook on section 8.6.4.1.4.3 for the sprinklers near
the
eave. The commentary indicates that sprinklers are required to be installed no
closer
than 5 ft from the intersection of the truss chords or the wood rafters and the
ceiling joists so that, if the fire starts along the eave, there will be a
sprinkler
close to the fire. The sprinklers located near the eave will also provide
protection
for a fire entering the concealed space from along the eave. The commentary is
referring
to the sprinkler spacing parallel with the eave as being closer together and not
the 5 ft minimum distance from the eave.
