The roof height is 35 ft where the storage is under the roof. May the minimum operating pressure for 35 ft be used for the ESFR criteria?" We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2010 edition as the applicable standard. Our informal interpretation is that the criteria for a maximum roof height of 35 ft can be used. Section 16.3.3.3 indicates that ESFR sprinkler systems shall be designed such that the minimum operating pressure is not less than that indicated in Table 16.3.3.1 for type of storage, commodity, storage height, and building height involved. So when the roof height over the storage does not exceed 35 ft, that criteria can be used. The ceiling heights can exceed the 35 ft outside of the storage area if you comply with Section 12.3 for adjacent hazard or design methods. This requires a barrier partition to prevent heat from a fire from fusing sprinklers in the adjacent area or the more demanding design basis extends 15 ft beyond the perimeter. The commentary for Section 16.3.3.3 from the Sprinkler Systems Handbook also supports this where it states, "ESFR performance is highly dependent on the ceiling/roof height, which is why averaging of ceiling/roof heights based on pitched roofs is not acceptable. The maximum ceiling/roof height over the storage area being protected must be selected."
