American Fire Sprinkler Association [http://www.firesprinkler.org/] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ AFSA Technical Update ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A newsletter dealing with codes and other technical issues November 2, 2012 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Design Criteria for Inside the Dwelling Unit Using QR Sprinklers "Inside the dwelling unit, using extended coverage quick-response horizontal sidewalls, not residential heads in a new four story apartment building. Section 6.2.1.3.1 requires 0.1 gpm/sq. ft. density over the entire dwelling unit, not just the compartment for all quick-response heads. In addition, the flow must at least meet the listing requirements for the spacing used. Section 7.1.2 requires you to meet the discharge and design area requirements of NFPA 13 which seems to contradict 6.2.1.3.1 on two points: 1) NFPA 13 would require the head to be calculated per the listing for the area covered, not the entire dwelling unit; and 2) NFPA 13 would require at least 5 heads be calculated or this head and two in the communicating space to the corridor, whereas if this is the only head in the compartment of the dwelling unit NFPA 13R would require that I only calculate the one head in the dwelling unit. Which one applies?" We have reviewed NFPA 13R, 2010 edition as the applicable standard. Our informal interpretation is that Section 7.1.2 applies to meet the discharge and design area requirements of NFPA 13. There is no conflict between Sections 6.2.1.3.1 and 7.1.2. Section 6.2.1.3.1 is indicating a density requirement of 0.1 gpm/sq. ft. over the entire dwelling unit where no more than four sprinklers are located in the dwelling unit. Where extended coverage quick response sprinklers are used, the flow shall be sufficient to meet the listing of the sprinklers at the spacing for which they are being used. The manufacturer's data sheet provides this information. This section does not indicate the number of sprinklers to calculate but it does place a maximum of four quick-response sprinklers per dwelling unit. Section 7.1.2 indicates that where quick-response sprinklers are used in accordance with 6.2.1.3, the discharge and design area criteria shall comply with NFPA 13. Section 7.1.2 specifically references Section 6.2.1.3 so there is no conflict in the design area. NFPA 13 will allow a density/area approach along with the use of the quick-response reduction but the number of sprinklers in the design area shall never be less than five according to Section 11.2.3.2.3.2 of NFPA 13. The other design approach is the room design method in Section 11.2.3.3 of NFPA 13. This option is based upon the room that creates the greatest demand and the room is enclosed with wall having a fire resistance rating equal to the water supply duration in Table 11.2.3.1.2. Applying this to your situation of a single head in a dwelling unit, this would be a single head design if there were automatic or self-closing doors provided. Where the openings are not protected, the calculations shall include the sprinklers in the room plus two sprinklers in the communicating space nearest each such opening which is usually a corridor. The corridor design area is address by Section 7.2 where it also refers to NFPA 13. The Residential Occupancies Handbook gives a background on Section 6.2.1.3 where this is frequently called the "hotel room exception" because the dwelling unit for which this paragraph is most often used is a hotel room. This paragraph was written for the first edition of NFPA 13R in order to help the lodging industry. During the 1980s, the lodging industry was making a concerted effort to sprinkler all of their hotels (both new construction and existing buildings) in the wake of disastrous fires in Las Vegas, Nevada, Mamaroneck, New York, and Puerto Rico. The most efficient way to sprinkler most hotel rooms is with a single sidewall sprinkler that can throw water spray 22 ft into the room, which protects most of the bedroom area. In these small dwelling units, quick-response sprinklers could be used, even though they were not tested or listed for providing tenable conditions in the room of fire origin. Part of the compromise was that the hotel room would also have a smoke detector for early warning. Although this detector requirement was originally included in the standard, it has been removed since all building codes require such a detector and NFPA 13R is a sprinkler standard, not a detector standard. Although 6.2.1.3 was written to apply to hotel guest rooms, it can apply to any dwelling unit that is similarly small, such as an efficiency apartment. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ firesprinkler.org [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001oPeOLinIs4xSMusnkN3qKgVN0av-rjT2o2851rqzDzPE4oU6A66K8WX2HXQANsWt9lj3RudyoeDpRlZWiW-gfTBnI4IlfKg28vEDzusB20gpo6a-kvcHWA==] Hosted by the American Fire Sprinkler Association ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Technical Update is prepared by the Technical Services Dept. of the AFSA: Vice President of Engineering and Technical Services Roland Huggins, a PE registered in fire protection engineering; Phill Brown, a NICET IV certified automatic sprinkler technician and NFPA Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS) and Tom Wellen, a PE registered in fire protection engineering.
