Rolled Paper Storage

"I have an existing area/density system that is designed at 0.45/4,000 using
K-factor
8.0 upright sprinklers. The new building owner is going to store rolled paper 18
ft high in a building with a height of 27 ft 3 in. maximum. The paper is
heavyweight,
open array, banded or unbanded. My questions are: 1) Do we need to change out
the
existing sprinklers to a K-factor of 11.2 or greater if we stay with the
area/density
design? 2) Do you know of any reason roof or smoke vents would need to be added
if we use the existing area/density design? The existing building does not have
any. 3) If we decide to use a ESFR design, does it require any draft curtains
between
storage and production areas?"

We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2010 edition as the applicable standard. Our informal
interpretation is that the original 8.0 K-factors can be retained.

As identified in Section 12.6.4, the requirements of Sections 12.6.2 and 12.6.3
shall not apply to modifications to existing storage application systems, using
sprinklers with K-factors of K-8.0 or less. The annex for this section indicates
that a modification of an existing system includes extending sprinkler
protection
into adjacent areas. Thus the existing system can be used if it can provide
protection
per Chapter 19. NFPA 13 does not dictate whether roof vents are to be installed
for your second question. The architect or the engineer of record for the
project
would require the roof vents per the applicable building code or fire code. NFPA
13 addresses roof vents in Section 12.1.1 and allows them to be permitted if
they
have a higher temperature classification than the automatic sprinklers. If you
should
use ESFR sprinklers referenced in your third question, draft curtains separating
ESFR sprinklers at system breaks or from control mode sprinklers or between
hazards
shall be permitted per section 12.1.1.3.1. This section also says to see
8.4.6.4.
It indicates that a draft curtain is required to separate the two areas when the
adjacent area has standard-response sprinklers. If both areas such as storage
and
production areas have fast-response operating elements, such as ESFR sprinklers
adjacent to an area with quick-response sprinklers (i.e. production area), a
draft
curtain would not be required.

It is also worth stating, that this action is in complete compliance where major
renovations require the building to be brought into compliance with the latest
editions of the codes and standards. Complying with the latest standard does not
exclude this allowance for modifying exiting systems and does not require the
system
to be the same as a newly installed system.
