Trapeze Hangers and Shared Support Structures
The 2013 edition of NFPA 13 has some new information regarding shared support
structures
and trapeze hangers. There are times where the support of system components are
desired to be combined other trades. This was generally not permitted in NFPA 13
until the 2013 edition where the sprinkler system component supports can be
shared
in transferring the loads to the building structure. A shared support structure
can be in the form of a pipe rack structure, a trapeze assembly, pipe stand, or
other similar assembly. Storage racks are not considered to be a shared support
structure. Section 9.1.1.3 provides the new guidance. A registered professional
engineer shall certify the shared support structures in accordance with
Sections
9.1.1.2 and 9.1.1.3. There are two options for design: 1) The sprinkler pipe and
other distribution systems shall be permitted to be supported from a shared
support
structure designed to support five times the weight of water filled sprinkler
pipe
and other supported distribution systems plus 250 lb, based on the allowable
ultimate
stress; or 2) The sprinkler pipe and other distribution systems shall be
permitted
to be supported from a shared support structure designed to support five times
the
weight of the water-filled sprinkler pipe plus 250 lb, and one and one-half
times
the weight of all other supported distribution systems. This new material also
clarifies
that the building structure shall not be considered a shared support structure.
The shared support structures do not apply to flexible sprinkler hose fittings
or
ceiling systems according to Section 9.1.1.3.1.4. The systems that are
incompatible
with the fire sprinkler systems based on vibration, thermal expansion and
contraction,
or other factors shall not share support structures.

As indicated above, a trapeze assembly can be used as a support structure. The
new
changes to for the trapeze hanger tables were not based upon the requirements of
shared support structures. The spans for trapeze members were expanded from 10
ft up to 16 ft. Otherwise, the spans that exceeded the tables for the section
modulus
required for trapeze members required further analysis. The spans were also
changed
from 1 ft to 6 in. increments. The table was split to provide separate tables
for
the nominal diameter of pipe being supported for Schedule 10 and Schedule 40
pipe
to reduce confusion. The 2010 edition table had two values provided for each
span
where the top values were for Schedule 10 pipe and the bottom values were for
Schedule
40 pipe. The annex for the new trapeze table indicates that the values are based
 on single continuous trapeze members.
