We have reviewed NFPA 15, 2012 edition that you indicated as the applicable standard. Our informal interpretation is that the only pier or footing details for pipe stands are provided in the annex material. The annex Figure A.6.3.2.2.4 shows the detail for the support leg footings for pipe stands. Several committee members were contacted regarding this figure. The figure was purposely inserted into the annex starting in the 2001 edition so there were no limiting factors. The figure does not show any sizes or steel reinforcement within the concrete since it was not needed. It's expected that concrete will be poured into a form or form tube with anchor j-bolts in place. The diameter of the footing or pier needs to be only slightly larger than the flange size. For example, 4-inch vertical pipe may have a 9-inch flange. The pier or footing would need a diameter of at least 11-inches. The depths are not shown because of soil variations. The sprinkler contractor can subcontract this to the general contractor or one of their subcontractors. Since the loops are supported by several pipe stands, the assembly should be quite rigid. The other issue that will likely be discussed in the next edition cycle is the use of the term footing. The construction term pier may be a better option than footer or footing. A pier is a column of masonry, usually rectangular in horizontal cross section, used to support other structural members. A footer or footing is a continuous thick concrete pad installed before and supports the foundation wall or monopost.
