AFSA Technical Update ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A newsletter dealing with codes and other technical issues July 17, 2013 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Water Delivery Test for Preaction Systems We have several double interlock preaction systems with very long pipe runs from the end of the last branch line to the exterior. The additional pipe is adding additional time on the 60-second water delivery test required by NFPA 13. Is this test intended to test the duration for water to reach the building exterior or the last sprinkler in the system? If the latter is true, would using a sight glass to determine when the water arrives an acceptable approach?" We have reviewed the 2013 edition of NFPA 13 as the applicable standard. Our informal interpretation is that water delivery to the last sprinkler is the point of interest. The starting in the criteria is Section 8.17.4.4.3 that states that a test connection consists of an assembly made up of at least 1in. piping, a shut-off valve with a plug, and terminating at an orifice that provides a flow equivalent to one sprinkler. Additionally, Section 8.17.4.4.4 identifies that the test connection is provided at end of most remote sprinkler pipe (branch line as shown by Figure A.8.17.4.3). We typically use the discharge of water to stop the test because it is easily seen but we are interested in the duration to reach the furthest sprinkler since that is what fights the fire. This is indicated by the criteria saying when the water gets TO the test connection (see Section 7.3.2.3.1.2). Although not explicitly discussed in NFPA 13, the use of a sight glass will show when water reaches the test connection.
