ESFR Design Area
ESFR sprinklers are spaced on opposite sides of 24 inch obstructions at or near
the ceiling and do not exceed one-half the allowable distance between
sprinklers.
The obstructions were added after the system was installed. A consultant is
stating
that he wants an additional calculation proving 15 sprinklers in the remote
area.
Are we required to pick up the added sprinklers in the remote area or is the
required
calculation 4 sprinklers on 3 lines?"
Our informal interpretation is that ESFR design is usually 12 sprinklers and
adding
additional three heads to the calculation may not be required. We have reviewed
NFPA 13, 2013 edition as the applicable standard.
Chapters 12 and 14 through 20 specify ESFR protection. Section 12.7.6.3 says
that
when using ESFR sprinklers, the design area shall consist of the most
hydraulically
demanding area of 12 sprinklers, consisting of four sprinklers on each of three
branch lines, unless other specific numbers of design sprinklers are required in
other sections of this standard. Chapters 14 through 17 are consistent say the
design area shall consist of the most hydraulically demanding area of 12
sprinklers,
consisting of four sprinklers on each of three branch lines. Tire Storage is
generally
12 sprinklers but there is a storage configuration requiring a design consisting
of the most hydraulically demanding area of 20 sprinklers a minimum operating
area
of 1600 sq. ft. Chapter 19 for roll paper storage is 12 sprinklers and Section
20.2
for plastic motor vehicle parts has criterion for 16 sprinklers. As such, if the
criteria specifies 12 sprinklers, then Section 23.4.4.3 says the design area
shall
consist of the most hydraulically demanding area of 12 sprinklers, consisting of
four sprinklers on each of three branch lines, unless other specific numbers of
design sprinklers are required in other sections of this standard. The ESFR
sprinklers
should be placed per the obstruction rules per Section 8.12.5 for isolated and
continuous
obstructions. An approach changed regarding including additional sprinklers
under
obstructions from the 2010 edition to the 2013 edition. The 2013 edition struck
out the text that states, "The discharge for up to two sprinklers from one of
the
levels shall be included with those of the other level in the hydraulic
calculation."
The substantiation included for this change was that FM Global originally
proposed
this rule because they were concerned with the 12-sprinkler design when extra
sprinklers
were installed under obstructions. This requirement was removed from their data
sheets and NFPA 13 should follow suit since the requirement originated from FM
Global
data sheets. The committee also deleted the requirement from Sections 14.4.4,
15.4.4,
16.3.3.6, 16.2.3.5 17.3.3.5, and 17.2.3.4 for correlation. With that said, the
consultant
should provide a reference for the 15-sprinkler design or the reasoning for
deviating
from the NFPA standard. Some type of document, alert, or insurance requirement
should
be specified for you to follow. Requirements beyond the minimum standard without
justification can cause undue burdens on the water supply, increased design
time,
increased material costs, and the design approach change can cause confusion
with
other AHJs. For example, not only would the sprinkler system demand increase,
the
outside hose for a 15 head design would increase from 250 gpm with water supply
duration of 1 hour to 500 gpm for water supply duration for 90 minutes.
