I assume that this also includes sprinklers with Quartzoid bulbs. Is this the correct assumption?" We have reviewed NFPA 25, 2014 edition that you indicated as the applicable standard. Our informal interpretation is that 5-year testing requirement does not apply to glass bulb sprinklers. The base requirement in 5.3.1.1.1.4 says that representative samples of solder-type sprinklers with a temperature classification of extra high 325°F or greater that are exposed to semi- continuous to continuous maximum allowable ambient temperature conditions shall be tested at 5-year intervals. The annex material clarifies in A.5.3.1.1.1.4 that due to solder migration caused by the high temperatures to which these devices are exposed, it is important to test them every 5 years. Because of this phenomenon, the operating temperature can vary over a wide range. This does not apply to glass bulb sprinklers.
