We have attached a swivel ring hanger to the pipe trapeze. Can a swivel ring hanger be used to support the sprinkler pipe from a pipe trapeze member?" We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2010 edition that you indicated as the applicable standard. Our informal interpretation is that swivel ring hangers listed for trapeze applications can be used to support pipe from a trapeze member. There was a change in the use of rods and ring hangers for trapeze supports starting with the 2007 edition. The changes required swivel ring hangers attached to the trapeze member to be listed "trapeze" or "heavy duty" ring hangers that have heavier metal. Historically in the 2002 edition, Section 9.1.1.6.5 indicated that where a pipe is suspended from a pipe trapeze of a diameter less than the diameter of the pipe being supported; ring, strap, or clevis hangers of the size corresponding to the suspended pipe shall be used on both ends. It was permissible to have a larger size swivel ring attaching to a smaller size pipe (trapeze member). The swivel ring was formed or bent to accommodate the smaller pipe to prevent the swivel ring from elongating over time. The 2007 edition of NFPA 13 included new changes to trapeze assemblies. Section 9.1.1.6.5 indicates that all components of each hanger assembly that attach to a trapeze member shall conform to 9.1.1.4 (listing) and be sized to support the suspended sprinkler pipe. Section 9.1.1.6.6 also indicates that the ring, strap, or clevis installed on a pipe trapeze shall be manufactured to fit the pipe size of the trapeze member. The committee wanted to address the issue of using a larger sized ring, strap, or clevis hanger for a smaller piece of trapeze pipe. The committee felt that hangers are listed for the pipe sizes indicated. For example, a 4-inch swivel ring should hold a 4-inch pipe. The 4-inch swivel ring is capable of supporting a 2-inch pipe, but the listing is not obtained in that manner. The committee also wanted to remove the elongation issue. The rod size was also in question. A 3/8-inch rod on the trapeze assembly was allowed to be used to support a 6-inch sprinkler pipe. This change in wording would require the rod sizes on the trapeze assembly to correspond with the rod size of the pipe being supported. Manufacturers have responded with trapeze or heavy-duty hangers for trapeze applications with the adjustable threaded ring nut to accept 3/8-in. or 1/2-in. rods to support a larger sized sprinkler pipe up to 8-inches. For example, the sections will require 2-in. hangers for a 2-inch trapeze pipe. When a 6-inch sprinkler pipe is supported, heavy-duty 2-in. trapeze swivel ring, strap, or clevis hangers will be required on the trapeze pipe.
