NFPA 13R - Protection Area of Sidewall Sprinkler Under a Deck
"Per 903.3.1.2.1 of the 2012 IFC, we are required to add sidewall sprinklers to
covered exterior decks in Type V construction. The requirement of 1 in. to 6
in.
below structural members and 14 in. max below the deck is outside the NFPA 13,
13R,
and 13D guidelines as well as most sidewall sprinkler listings. The question
is,
if the IFC allows us to go outside of NFPA guidelines and sprinkler listings, is
it also allowable to go outside the spacing from walls? For example, the
listing
and NFPA 13R says sidewall to be located no further than 7 ft off of the wall,
but
we would like to install the sidewall to cover 10 ft off the wall."
We have reviewed IFC, 2012 edition that you indicated as the applicable code as
well as the 2013 edition of NFPA 13R. Our informal interpretation is that
although
the protection area of coverage of a sidewall sprinkler is not indicated, it is
expected to apply.
An extended coverage sprinkler may provide better coverage options for coverage
than standard spray sprinklers. The IFC as well as the IBC does have a
requirement
to provide sprinkler protection of balconies, patios, and decks in Section
903.3.1.2.1
that mainly addresses deflector distances with respect to balcony construction
members.
These applications will violate the listing of sidewall sprinklers. I don't
believe
the intent is to ignore protection area of coverage. Sidewall sprinklers that
are
used to protect such areas shall be permitted to be located such that their
deflectors
are within 1 inch to 6 inches below the structural members, and a maximum
distance
of 14 inches below the deck of the exterior balconies that are constructed of
open
wood joist construction. The commentary in the IFC says that sidewall
sprinklers
should be selected based on the area of coverage and climate. Where the
overhanging
deck or balcony is extensive, an extended coverage sprinkler should be selected.
The 2013 edition of NFPA 13R also has new text to include similar wording as
the
IBC for new Sections 6.6.5.1 and 6.6.5.1.1. There is no indication of
protection
area of coverage for the application. The handbook commentary under this
section
says that the rules of 6.6.5.1.1 mirror those found in one of the model building
codes. The requirement that sprinklers be installed with a deflector distance
within 1 in. to 6 in. below the bottom of the joist emulates the requirements of
standard upright and pendent sprinklers below obstructed construction found in
NFPA 13. Although this installation is outside of the listing of sidewall
sprinklers,
it would provide better protection than omitting sprinklers altogether. The 14
in. depth required in this paragraph provides a maximum depth for the entire
assembly.
