Control Mode Density-Area Sprinklers
"When applying Control Mode Density-Area (CMDA) design per Table 18.4(b), do you
have to use sprinklers that are specifically listed as CMDA?"
We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2013 edition as the applicable standard. Our informal
interpretation is that the phrase control mode density-area sprinkler refers to
the standard spray sprinkler used for protecting storage applications.
The use of standard spray sprinklers for storage applications has been applied
for
quite some time. The use of the term "control mode density-area" may not be
indicated
on the manufacturer's data sheet and does not disqualify its use. There will be
a definition added to the 2016 edition as follows: 3.6.4.1* Control Mode
Density/Area
(CMDA) Sprinkler. A type of spray sprinkler intended to provide fire control in
storage applications using the design density/area criteria described in this
standard.
With that said, NFPA 13 requires the use of listed storage sprinklers for
higher
densities. Lower densities use a regular standard spray sprinkler. Section
12.6.3
indicates for general storage applications, rack storage, rubber tire storage,
roll
paper storage, and baled cotton storage being protected with upright and pendent
spray sprinklers with required densities greater than 0.34 gpm/sq. ft.,
standard
response spray sprinklers with a K-factor of K-11.2 or larger that are listed
for
storage applications shall be used. There is an exception to this for existing
systems. Section 12.6.4 indicates that unless the requirements of 12.6.5 are
met,
the requirements of 12.6.2 and 12.6.3 shall not apply to modifications to
existing
storage application systems, using sprinklers with K-factors of K-8.0 or less.
