Cold Soldering Movable Partition
"Two sprinklers are installed on opposite sides of a folding partition. When
the
partition is open, the sprinklers are less than 6 ft apart. Is this
acceptable?"
We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2010 and 2013 editions that you indicated as the
applicable
standards. Our informal interpretation is that although baffles are required by
the standard, it may not be necessary for this situation.
The movable walls or partitions are common applications in buildings to separate
a room into smaller rooms. This requires sprinklers to be placed for proper
coverage
when the movable wall or partition in both the open and closed positions. When
the wall is open, the sprinklers are spaced closer than 6 ft where a baffle is
required
by Section 8.6.3.4.2. The intent of the baffle is to prevent water spray from
reaching
the adjacent sprinkler. This is to ensure proper coverage by the sprinklers.
This
is different for your situation. The sprinklers are spaced where sprinkler
coverage
is still provided even if a cold soldering event occurred when the wall is open.
The baffle is not critical for this application. Thus, the system would still
operate as designed without the baffles. The cold soldering may affect the
area
of coverage of the sprinklers. Evaluate how much area of coverage may be
increased
from the cold soldering. A sprinkler may cold solder but the operating
sprinkler
will also prevent the condition of flashover inside the space. Since this
situation
is not specifically addressed by the standard, discuss this with the AHJ.
