Schedule 10 Steel Piping for FDC

"Is the steel pipe indicated in Section 10.1.3 allowed to be Schedule 10
galvanized?”

We have reviewed NFPA 24, 2010 edition that you indicated as the applicable
standard as well as the 2016 edition. Our informal interpretation is that
Schedule 10 galvanized pipe can be used.

Section 10.1.3 refers to steel pipe that is externally coated and wrapped and
internally galvanized between the check valve and the outside hose coupling for
the fire department connection. There is no indication of the minimum pipe
thickness. The commentary from the 2010 edition of the Sprinkler Systems
Handbook indicates that steel pipe can be used for piping to a fire department
connection because the fire department connection is an auxiliary water supply
for the sprinkler system rather than a primary water supply. A change to the
2016 edition of NFPA 24 indicates in Section 10.1.1.3 that steel piping
manufactured in accordance with Table 10.1.1.3 that is externally coated and
wrapped and internally galvanized shall be permitted to be used between the
hose coupling(s) on the fire department connection and the check valve
installed in the fire department connection piping. Table 10.1.1.3 says the
pipes have to meet one of the following standards: a) Specification for Black
and Hot-Dipped, Zinc-Coated (Galvanized) Welded and Seamless Steel Pipe for
Fire Protection Use, ASTM A795; b) Standard Specification for Pipe, Steel,
Black and Hot-Dipped, Zinc-Coated, Welded and Seamless, ASTM A53; or c)
Standard Specification for Electric-Resistance Welded Steel Pipe ASTM A135.
