Remote Area Reduction with Ceiling Pockets
“If in your remote area, you have a ceiling height of 21 ft 0 in. next to an 18 ft 0 in. ceiling, can you utilize any area reduction if the 21 ft 0 in. is only a small portion of the area?” We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2016 edition that you indicated as the applicable standards. Our informal interpretation is that the ceiling is too high for the quick response sprinkler reduction. Section 11.2.3.2.3.1 in number (3) indicates a 20-ft maximum ceiling height, thus a reduction for quick response sprinklers cannot be applied. For protected ceiling pockets with ceiling heights less than 20 ft, then section 11.2.3.2.3.1 can be applied. The percent reduction to the design area would be calculated from the highest ceiling elevation in the remote area. If the ceiling pocket falls outside the remote area, an additional calculation would be necessary for the area with the ceiling pocket to prove the sprinklers at the higher elevation. As such, the determining factor in applying a quick response reduction is the ceiling height and not the area of the protected ceiling pocket. Also, note that the quick response reduction cannot be used when there are unprotected ceiling pockets allowed by 8.6.7 and 8.8.7 that exceed 32 sq. ft. in area Section 11.2.3.2.3.1 in number (4). -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
