As I wrote above, the plugin system is now public (v2.0) so others may
contribute by writing:
    * I/O plugins for the variable explorer (to import/export from/to
new file types)
    * integrated plugins: see the example of the 'pylint' plugin which
has been written as a 3rd-party plugin

I understand... but you're not the only one. Every single person I
know who tried an IDE like Eclipse wanted Spyder to have a project
explorer.
