Yep, I was a bit hesitant to push these commits to the stable branch
because my last attempt was a bit of a headache (I mean our troubles
with 2.1.8 and Ubuntu). Besides, I was waiting for the affected user
confirmation, which just happened a month or so ago.
Jed the clone you refer too was outdated, so I created a new one, added
my changes to it and updated them with latest tip. You can pull them doing:
$ hg pull -B i812 https://code.google.com/r/ccordoba12-v21/
in your own clone of the 2.1 repo, or just pulling my entire clone.
You can test the changes by creating an account on *Windows* (they
shouldn't have any effect on other OSes) with a non-ascii name (like
Cárlos) and then running Spyder inside it. If everything goes well, then
Spyder should start normally and you should be able to enter commands on
the console and get the history recorded on the history log. If not, two
things can happen:
1. A hard crash during startup
2. A traceback on the internal console saying that history filename is
not in unicode.
Thanks for your help.
Cheers,
Carlos
PS. If you have a bit more of spare time, you could also help me to test
my fix on the 2.2 branch. For it my clone is called ccordoba12-work and
the bookmark is also called i812.

Hi Carlos,
I fully agree.
But why were you waiting for pushing those changes?
Cheers,
Pierre
Carlos, if you think they might be destabilizing changes, push them up
to a clone. I'd be happy to test them from there.
