No answer yet, so I thought I'd add the following.

When I mouse over the greyed-out preferences option, it says "This option is 
not available for iPython versions which are not fully supported through 
Spyder's console (i.e. iPython v0.11+)"

Since we're now at least at iPython v0.13, this seems like quite a gap in 
Spyder's capability.

The reason for both Spyder and iPython is to make the whole process more 
efficient, and both do this very well.

Will there be proper iPython integration into the Spyder console?
