Hi William,
I'm afraid this is not possible at the moment. Right now Spyder can only
introspect kernels started by itself (i.e. the ones used by our IPython
consoles). The reasons lie in some technical difficulties we have to
connect directly to any IPython kernel. We intend to fix them during the
next six months or so.
But the good news is that we already have a working prototype of a
Notebook plugin for Spyder. We hope to make it publicly available before
the end of the year.
Cheers,
Carlos

I am primarily a Matlab user trying to migrate to Python. Spyder's
Variable Explorer feature is very important to me. Recently I've been
experimenting with doing my workflow in an IPython Notebook, but I
dislike not having a Variable Explorer. My thought was that I could
simply tell Spyder to connect to the Notebook's kernel and then be
able to see the variables. This however, does not happen. I see in the
documentation here
(http://pythonhosted.org/spyder/ipythonconsole.html), "IPython
Consoles attached to external kernels support a smaller feature set:"
That reduced feature set doesn't include the Variable Explorer. Why is
this? Is there any suggested workaround for getting Notebook
functionality but still being able to interact with the workspace
variables?
Thanks!
