Have also tried downloading spyder with pip2.7.exe

C:\Users\name>C:\Python27\Scripts\pip2.7.exe install spyder
Requirement already satisfied (use --upgrade to upgrade): spyder in

How there is only a .spyder2-py3 folder in C:\Users\name, not a .spyder2
folder

Now, in C:\Python27\scripts there is a spyder.bat file. If I try to
open, spyder opens however for 3.4 - NOT as expected

Because Python 3.4 is the default/current version. You cannot have two versions of Python be 'the' system Python at one time. On Linux you can use the alternatives mechanism to switch system versions, though this is recipe for disaster. Not sure how you would do this on Windows and even if I did I would recommend against it.

Also in C:\Python34\scripts, there is a spyder.bat file. If I try to
open, spyder opens however for 3.4 - as expected

Advice?

Look at virtual environments. I use virtualenv, but not sure that works well in Windows. Per a previous post from Julien Hillairet, you probably will need to look at one of the Windows specific solutions for multiple Python environments. See below under Installation On Windows for your choices:

What is your default version of Python?

Not sure how it works on Windows, but on Linux if you have more than
    one
version of Python installed you have to use the appropriate version of
pip. Just calling pip will get you the one for the default version of
Python. So in your case, assuming Python 3.4 is default, something
    like:

pip or pip3.4 will download and install for Python 3.4 packages

    pip2.7 for Python 2.7 packages.
