I'm sorry, I forgot about that crucial information. It is Spyder version 2.2.5. I use Python 2.7 and ipython 1.2.1. All of these were installed using apt-get install on Kubuntu 14.04.2 LTS.
When I run Spyder I do it via the Kubuntu "start menu", but I run ipython from the terminal. I'll try and run Spyder from a terminal and see if that makes a difference. I still don't know why that could make a difference though.
