Hi,
If you installed Spyder using Anaconda, you need to open a terminal
(Terminal.app) and run this command
conda update spyder
However, if you used any other method, you need to run this command
pip install -U spyder
Cheers,
Carlos

I am also brand new to Python and Spyder and use a Mac. I have Python
3.6, and Spyder 3.1.2. I get a message that version 3.1.3 is
available, but I am having difficulties with the update. The
instructions available assume that the reader is already a programmer,
which I'm not. Thanks for your help!

When I run Spyder it opens in python 2.7.13. Shouldn't Spyder
open in python 3? it seems to think I need to download python 3.
