Neal Stephenson is (or was?) a rapid crypto libertarian. That is to
say, he strongly believed in the individual's rights to privacy and
freedom, especially in the world of computers, where encyption
implements those ideals.

Unfortunately, Stephenson is also an author in tune with social
dynamics and how people work together. Two years ago, he gave a speech
basically coming to the conclusion that it is still a matter of who
you trust.
