When I initiated the download a window with a progress widget displayed
and told me that archiving was being done. When the download completed
that
window stayed up and chugging away until I eventually stopped it by
shutting
that window. Was this the correct thing to do, or was there more for
me to

Yes, I have noticed this but the downloaded file seems valid so just
ignore this.
