bcp won't be much better in this situation, as you still have to tell it
the file format for it to work.  Really, this situation is almost
impossible unless you standardize your file format or at least narrow it
down to where the file is in one of a few selected formats that you can
easily test to determine the right way to process.

Have you looked at the bcp utility? Might be more flexible in this
particular case.
