I don't think that's what we're suggesting here. SQLAlchemy isn't going to be
"dumbed down" if SQLObject2 is built on top of it.

Am I advocating never creating new projects? Of course not. But do I think the bar for "are my requirements really so different that I need to start a new project for them" should be set a lot higher than where most people seem to have theirs calibrated.

yeah, i dont know, people in the python community all want to do something "their way". Why does this happen in python and not other communities? or does it happen in other communities but the effect is different ?

Yes, it does happen in other communities. I don't think the effect is much
different except that in Python it's so easy to make something work while
leaving some things incomplete. I think this is a testament to the ease of
development and flexibility of Python (for example, you can't monkey-patch
Java...well maybe with AOP).

Im really not sure. but it seems to happen, why not just let it happen until some winners become apparent ? seems to be happening already (i.e. the consolidation of "winners").

I think that's what's happening here and we're all saying "Hey, you're both winners,
now let's make it better together!"

but if everyone wants to write their own thing, theres got to be a reason. just because someone complains that now they dont know what approach to use shouldnt mean i should now put away my ideas and defer to the "more popular" idea.

No, you shouldn't. You should prove that your ideas have value (are better?)
and then provide implementations that work with what's already there rather
than forking the community. The problem is that it's easier to fork than to
integrate.
