I have to challenge one of your statements. Adobe Camera Raw is not nearly identical to Lightroom. ACR is Lightroom's editing engine. When you are editing an image in Lightroom, you are using ACR. ACR has no need for a database of any kind, unless the XMP file contains a very tiny database. ACR certainly doesn't have a major database engine built into it, as Lightroom does with SQLite.
