Here's a new patch which includes:
* Tests for all of the supported Avro types (including null unions).
* A round trip test (DB -> Avro -> DB)
* A small refactoring to the test hierarchy - a couple of methods have been
pulled up to superclasses so they can be used by the new export tests.
I think this is ready for review now.
