So, I came to the conclusion that I must have done something wrong after wading though all of the replies & suggestions :rolleyes:
Taking the nuclear option I reinstalled Jessie from scratch and then installed 7.8.1 (which used to work perfectly for me under wheezy) *without adding any other libraries at all*. Even though the WebUI tells me lame isn't installed, everything plays perfectly (ogg, flac and MP3 files, plus every radio station that I use). After a few hours I decided to upgrade to the latest 7.9 nightly, and everything still works fine ... so far.
