Thanks to all of you. VortexBox looks interesting as I will have an old PC I could use. The issue for me is no longer a library issue as I mostly use ickstream and Deezer Elite these days. What I was hoping to avoid is the constant update cycle that comes with Windows which is fine for a multi purpose machine but is a real headache for a single purpose machine. I just want to put it on the network and let it run.
I should have been more clear about my definition of performance. For me now excellent fidelity and ease of use are most important. I still have my library but it is not huge and as I said I don't actually listen to it that much anymore. Special thanks to Michael Herger as your reply was very detailed and took some time.
