Is it possible that something about LMS or that plugin just locks out
those features...or has the effect of locking out those features during
a library scan?

I did a clean reinstall and scanned a tiny library to see if I still had
the problem...and I didn't (that library scanned in seconds).

Then I re-scanned the real library and the issue returned until the scan
was complete. Now that it's done, all is well again. 

I'll re-enable nightly rescan for new and changed files and see what
happens.
