I don't use crossfade/smartcrossfade but IIRC there was a patch to 7.9 about crossfade to avoid under some circumstances a loud burst of white noise - I wonder whether there is some "corner" issue that you have encountered. If you upgraded LMS to 7.9 recently perhaps some of the prefs didn't migrate properly and are now set up correctly.
