Since I posted to the forum I setup the spare PiCorePlayer v2 using the same enet cable. Still get the re-buffering :-/ So whatever is happening, it shouldn't be the SB2 (which makes me happy as I really, really love this little piece of audio gear).
There should be no transcoding -- all audio files are mp3, flac, or m4a. Also, not using streaming output, though I do listen to WFMT's stream for input, usually daily. Thanks bpa for your suggestion. I do have UPNP enabled and, I think, miniDLNA is also loaded though I rarely use either, but I'll stop reconfigure LMS to not load UPNP and I'll stop miniDLNA.
