Thanks bpa. Here's what I now know after I braved the Black Friday
hoards to buy a powered USB hub for my 2Tb drive connected to the RPi.

The problem is isolated to LMS 7.x.x on my Kubuntu system. Right now I'm
listening to Nils Frahm, Solo, 24-bit audio tracks using the same SB
Classic. But the LMS is a max2play RaspberryPi system LMS (still version
7.9 latest build). No buffering, no up/down sampling (that I know of --
I see no squeezelite or alsa settings that affect audio output in the
max2play UI). The file just plays (as I remember them just playing in
the past).

I can only conclude that some Kubuntu update of something in the past
month or so has messed with networking/audio/perl/?? such that the
ability of LMS to send audio data to the SB Classic is affected if that
audio is 24-bit.

But ... I'll add, in case anyone finds this thread, that I did see other
annoying behavior, though I can't tell if it is in any away related to
the 24-bit audio issue--LMS would periodically, and sometimes
frequently, fail to advance to the next track in a playlist. Pressing
the >> button on the remote, or the same control in SqueezeCommander,
would manually advance to the next track and playing would resume. The
UIs for both web and SqueezeCommander did not modify to a non-playing
state (that is, the pause/play control still looked like it was in
*play* mode, but no sound). That is not happening now using the max2play
LMS. Go figure.
