Hm.. seems you pointed me in the right direction at once... I just
recognized I had no resolv.conf on the system. I am a bit puzzled that
all other software seems to run fine with the file missing. Also
nslookup, dig and wget from commandline. They all used 127.0.0.1 as
nameserver. Not sure why they do that (but that is a good choice,
because the system runs dnsmasq and provides dns for my home network). 

I now added a resolv.conf file targeting to 127.0.0.1 and it works fine
again. I had this file in the past with the same contents. Must have
gone missing because of resolver or networkmanager or something (I don't
like them too much). Thanks for the hint.
