It's a common error that everyone does at some stage and frankly most of the tag databases and most rippers assign varius artist :/ they just do ? I think the developers for the most popular rip softwares should look at thier default settings , this and many other things creeps in when you new to this and you have to revisit the files to retag a decade later ?
And I think this was some convention used with other older software players that did not have a compilation menu .
