itm,

The Amazon link looks prefect. max2play is free, but the web ui (which is
fully functional from a tablet) will show it as "unregistered" unless you
pay--I wanted to support their work, so I was happy to give them some money.

Given your usage I don't think you'll need an addon audio component like
the HiFiBerry. Assume you'll use an app like iPeng (
http://penguinlovesmusic.de/ipeng-8/ for iOS) or SqueezePlayer (
http://squeezeplayer.de/ for AdroidOS). Full disclosure, I own and have
used both on an iPad4 and a Samsung S2 Tablet with my RPi/max2play system.

If so, then max2play will get you the LMS part. Image the max2play "system"
to an sd card (max2play website has a page on how to do this from a PC),
insert the sc card in the Pi3 sd card slot, and start up the Pi3. Simple as
that. Open the max2play web UI in a browser to install LMS.

max2play provides the option to install either/or SqueezeLite and LMS.
max2play SqueezeLite is the installed app that uses the HiFiBerry addon
board and its outputs to my AV system (and eventually my travel trailer
system), controlled by an app like iPeng, etc.. Since you won't need it,
disable its AutoStart option on the MusicPlayer tab and stop the app--this
will leave only LMS running.

To access the LMS requires a network. By far the easiest way is to use a
WiFi router which you already have. You can also configure a Pi3 to be its
own WiFi access point and avoid the need for the router (I may do this
myself--one less thing to draw power in my trailer):
https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/configuration/wireless/access-point.md
That is a fairly straightforward set of steps, but you'll need to be
comfortable with command line work on the Pi3. Note that you'll not need to
do anything in the "bridge" part of those instructions since your Pi3 won't
be connected to a router that is connected to the internet. One thing you
may want to do is buy a powered USB hub to use its voltage to power the USB
drive to remove that voltage draw on the Pi (e.g.,
https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Port-2-5A-power-adapter/dp/B00DQFGH80).

Hope this helps. I've been mostly happy using a Raspberry Pi this way. I
know that eventually my SqueezeBox hardware will fail so I explored using a
Pi as the LMS and it works fairly well. Only downside is that unless you
connect the Pi3 to a monitor with the HDMI cable, and add a usb/bluetooth
keyboard/mouse, your only access is via a terminal ssh or the max2play web
ui. If something goes awry (it's a human-built system so things can go
awry) it's a right PITA to trouble-shoot (and max2play is a German company
so there is usually a lag in response to any post one makes to the forum).
At my home I now have a usb keyboard/mouse and HDMI always connected to the
Pi3 just in case (I can see the Pi output on my TV by switching to the
right HDMI output on my AV receiver).

Regards.
