It will "support" it, but my reading of forum comments is that buying a
small powered USB hub is better for the drive (not so much the Pi). I can
remember from personal experience having issues with USB drives plugged
into Apple Macbooks when the newer drives required more current than the
USB port on the MacBook delivered. Basically the drive was not "recognized"
by the OS and not mounted. So, this recommendation for the Pi didn't seem
odd to me (a Pi is certainly a much smaller device). The powered USB hubs
deliver about the same current to the USB drivers plugged into it that the
Pi does, they're simply not also running a small motherboard, with
networking, audio, video, etc..
