take down the whole LMS.  Neither the webpage works nor any apps.

Must be a problem on your end: mysb.com is up and running. And it would certainly not take down LMS. LMS can live without mysb.com. Did you check your server.log file?

Is this a known issue?  Any way to workaround?  I tried repointing
mysqueezebox.com to localhost using /etc/hosts , but LMS seems to go
straight to DNS.

Don't get me wrong, but when a user is posting such stuff right away, I often think he stumbled over a power-user failure. Happened to me, too. Please double-check your network configuration. Too much tinkering can indeed bring things down...
