It's worth the try for me, I can certainly get them compiled, please provide instructions/dependencies and I'll give it a shot over the weekend.
As you're on a Mac... I did a quick test with the latest Image::Scale, and it did indeed no longer hang the scan. Alas, in the AC/DC case it would simply return no image at all. I'd therefore still suggest you do fix the artwork in those files.
