BTW, FYI, I'm playing through an SOTM SMS-100 running squeezelite
(connected to network switch with CAT7 cable, LMS running on a QNAP NAS
connected to the same switch), with its USB output connected to an
Esoteric K-03 as DAC.
I retried a back to back listening test between going flac direct and
wav transcoded this morning. There is still a subtle but audible
difference (though I do acknowledge that there's hardly any technical
reason for this), but whether it's better or worse either way would
probably be down to listener's preference. untranscoded is slightly
warmer and transcoded is slightly more open. The difference seems to be
much less than what I remembered during the days when I was using an SBT
as the renderer. I'm leaving it on FLAC direct for now to see if I can
"live with it" in the longer run, and save the trouble with the problem
tracks.

Thanks again.
