Success! The scan log showed the crash right after a specific file. I thought maybe the exclamation mark in the filenames (this was an album with three songs and my filenames are complete with artist, album name, track # and song title), so I renamed them but it still crashed after that. I then proceeded to delete the files and now all of my albums are indexed properly. Pre-caching artwork now...
Not sure what was up with those files. The permissions were fine, so it's something else. With dozens of new albums every week (record labels are very generous now that they use mp3 for promos), one less album won't make much of a difference. Thanks again everyone for your help! It had been a very long time since I had run into a problem with LMS. Still a bit odd that LMS running on Ubuntu 16.04 (v7.9.1 but I was running 7.7.6 before without any issue) could get through those files without any problems though.
