I usually clean up the tags using mp3tag after unzipping my promos and before moving the files to the library. I use a specific format for filenames and want to make sure that the tag are not all messed up (amazing how messy those can be) so that everything looks clean in LMS and on any other music player I use. I'll definitely be looking at that specific album when I get a chance to see what it is that caused the scanner to crash.
Can't say about pirated copies, but I'm always amazed at the crappy job that many (I should say "most") record labels do when tagging their promos.
