ffmpeg is swiss army knife - it has lots of functionality you'll never
use and so it can take up a lot of memory.  It uses the same libraries
as faad - so audio output will be identical. Any reformatting of bytes
may take a little more processing.

The "niggle" I have is that LMS might somewhere truncate to 16 bits for
PCM but it will be clearer when the difference between playing the same
file in flac and alac in PCM is understood.
